Zoho People vs BambooHR: Which HR Platform Fits Your Business?

Ask which HR platform to switch to and most business owners get pointed towards Zoho People, the vendor’s own answer, or straight to BambooHR, the polished platform everyone has heard of.
That is unfortunate because the two platforms are built around genuinely different priorities.
The right answer depends much more on your budget and existing technology stack than on which interface looks better during a five-minute demonstration.
Two Different Starting Points
Zoho People is the HR module within the wider Zoho suite.
It is priced to sit affordably alongside CRM, accounting, project management and support software. It can connect with Zoho Books, Zoho CRM and Zoho Projects through shared employee and business records.
BambooHR is a standalone, HR-first platform with no wider business suite behind it.
Its complete product roadmap is focused on people management, and that focus is visible in its more polished interface and gentler learning curve.
Neither approach is wrong.
The real question is whether HR should be one connected part of a broader business system or the best possible standalone tool for one specific function.

The Price Gap Is Not Subtle
This is where the comparison becomes particularly significant.
Zoho People’s UK pricing runs from approximately 83p per employee per month for Essential HR, through approximately £1.50 for Professional, £2.50 for Premium and £4 for Enterprise.
These figures come from an official UK government pricing document and should be confirmed against Zoho’s latest rates before publication or budgeting.
Payroll and recruitment functionality sits within a separate product called Zoho People Plus.
Zoho People Plus has its own four-tier structure:
Essential HR
Workforce
Talent
Enterprise
It should not be treated as a single add-on tier within the standard Zoho People product.
A 50-employee business using Zoho People Enterprise would be looking at approximately £2,400 per year for its core HR software.
BambooHR does not publish its prices publicly in any market. Every potential customer must request a customised quote from its sales team.
Independent 2026 estimates for BambooHR’s three-tier structure—Core, Pro and Elite—place UK-equivalent costs somewhere between approximately £8 and £20 per employee per month, depending on the selected package.
These estimates are not confirmed by BambooHR.
Implementation fees may also apply and are frequently estimated to begin at around £1,000.
A 50-employee company could therefore pay several times more for BambooHR than for Zoho People while receiving broadly comparable core HR functionality.
Where BambooHR Genuinely Wins
Ease of use is BambooHR’s clearest and most consistently reported advantage.
Reviewers frequently highlight:
A clean and polished interface
A minimal learning curve
Straightforward employee record management
Easy adoption for new HR staff
Reduced need for formal platform training
Its applicant tracking system is built directly into the platform rather than being added through a separate product.
BambooHR’s onboarding workflows are also widely regarded as a strength.
These can support:
Automated welcome packs
Electronic signatures
New-starter documentation
Onboarding checklists
IT provisioning triggers
Internal notifications
These features are praised even by reviewers who find BambooHR’s quote-based pricing unclear or frustrating.
For a business with no existing Zoho footprint that prioritises a fast and low-friction rollout over long-term ecosystem integration, BambooHR’s polish has genuine value.
Where Zoho People Wins for Growing Businesses
Beyond the significant pricing difference, Zoho People’s main advantage is integration.
Zoho People can share employee information with applications such as Zoho Books, Zoho Projects and Zoho CRM.
For example, adding a new employee in Zoho People can trigger:
Asset allocation
Project access
Application permissions
Internal onboarding tasks
Manager notifications
Employee record creation across connected systems
This reduces repetitive data entry and helps ensure employee information remains consistent across the organisation.
For a business already using Zoho One, Zoho People can become a relatively low-cost addition rather than another standalone system that must be purchased, connected and managed separately.
Zoho People also structures its plans so businesses can pay for the level of functionality they currently need.
A small team using Essential HR does not need to pay for advanced performance management or workflow functionality it is not ready to use.
This can offer greater pricing flexibility than BambooHR’s opaque, quote-based structure, where businesses may not know exactly how individual features contribute to the total cost.
Neither Platform Has Fully Native UK Payroll
This is an important point that is often missing from HR software comparisons.
Neither Zoho People nor BambooHR processes UK payroll fully and natively out of the box.
Zoho’s own payroll product, Zoho Payroll, is confirmed as available in:
India
The United Arab Emirates
Saudi Arabia
The United States
UK businesses generally achieve HMRC RTI-compliant payroll by using a third-party Zoho Marketplace extension or keeping payroll within a separate UK payroll provider and synchronising employee information between systems.
BambooHR has moved further in this area than it had previously.
It offers a Xero Payroll integration covering the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
This makes UK payroll compliance achievable, but it still depends on a third-party connection rather than BambooHR’s own payroll engine, which remains primarily designed for the US market.
This is not necessarily a weakness unique to either platform.
It is simply a UK market consideration that should be understood before assuming either HR system will manage PAYE, pension auto-enrolment and payroll reporting natively.
If payroll is the main problem your business is trying to solve, the required integration should be included in the evaluation regardless of which HR platform you choose.
The Practical Verdict
Choose BambooHR if:
Your business has no existing Zoho footprint
Ease of use is your main priority
You want a polished standalone HR platform
Built-in recruitment tools are important
Your budget can absorb a significantly higher cost
Fast adoption matters more than wider business integration
Choose Zoho People if:
You already use or plan to use Zoho One
You want affordable core HR functionality
You need HR information connected with finance, projects or CRM
You prefer a flexible tier structure
You are willing to invest in proper initial configuration
Long-term software consolidation is a priority
For most SMEs in the £1m–£20m range already using Zoho for sales, finance or customer support, Zoho People is extremely difficult to argue against on value alone.
The wider question is whether its integrations are properly configured to deliver that value rather than leaving Zoho People as a disconnected module that nobody has fully implemented.
As one of only six Zoho Premium Partners in the UK, SME Advantage implements Zoho People around your actual employee lifecycle and connects it correctly with the rest of your Zoho environment.
